As we grow up we experience a variety of different things in our life. We learn from the many environments we are raised in such as the family home, school or our group of friends. This combination of influences can instill within us certain beliefs about the world. They can often seem completely true but in fact they are merely beliefs that you hold about the world. They are what helps you interpret what you experience. Everything you come across goes through these filters and that is how you view events. Everybody has a whole range of these beliefs, however, some of them, more than others, can hold people back from succeeding. Here is a list of some of the most commonly held beliefs.
Please note that these often influence you on a subconscious level and unless you give some serious analysis to it, then it may be difficult to identify which beliefs you hold. However, If you find yourself reading any of these and saying “but that is true” then you absolutely know you have that belief.
I am always right
This is a remarkably common belief in people. Often referred to as the “God Complex”, people who always think they are right are already in a difficult position. One quick look at life and reality tells you that this can’t be true, unfortunately. However, the more profound impact of this belief is that it will lead you to dismiss other people’s opinions and ideas. This can only hurt you. Collaborating on ideas is what allows people to draw from a huge range of knowledge and skills sets. This enhances your collective brain within a business which helps provide more solutions and a deeper engaged workforce.
People are fragile and need my help
A limiting belief I have personal experience of. This can be born out of having someone close to you who always liked to do things for you. Not out of any malice but out of their caring nature. This ultimately makes it difficult for you to give bad news or be straightforward with people. You feel they will struggle to handle it and therefore you should hold it back to protect them.
I can’t trust salespeople
Again this is a remarkably common belief. Even amongst business owners. I think it may be borne out of popular culture. The idea that you have a slimy salesman who will go to anything lengths to make a sale, is a common narrative in culture. The challenge with this belief is that if you think salespeople are untrustworthy how are you ever going to be comfortable selling to anyone. Quite a big problem if you are a business owner.
Money is bad
When someone goes into business you would think they have some desire to make money. Well, you would be surprised how many people hold a belief that money is bad. I am not too sure whether I need to state the potential hindrance this may have on running a business. Believing money is bad will certainly have an impact on your ability to make it.
Limiting beliefs can be a great hindrance to your progress. However, the main problem is they feel so real, like facts. They often happen in our subconscious and it is only through real reflection that you can unearth them. ONce you have though you can get to work on amending them to a more helpful viewpoint. We all have them, so don’t feel alone in your quest to unearth what may be holding you back. If you can target them and work on them, the world is your oyster.
