When selling we are always looking for what reason people are buying for. The truth is people have basic needs that they look to fulfil and they do this through buying certain products. These drivers are so ingrained and so primal that many people aren’t aware that is what they are trying to fulfil. They are evolutionarily developed needs that are massively powerful and will never really go away. If you can aim your product at one of these then you know that it will always have an audience.
Food and Shelter
It is no great shock that people look to fulfil basic survival needs such as food and shelter. This is something that will never change. As one of the most basic primal needs this is possibly the strongest driver there is for buying things. No matter what happens people need food and shelter to simply survive.
The fear of being unsafe can act as a massive driver for people in buying things. They want security for their families, their possessions and themselves. This is a very primal driver in people that is constantly looking to be fulfilled to alleviate any fear around being unsafe.
One of the main drivers in people is to feel like they belong to something bigger than themselves. It is why people come together in so many different ways. It is why people will give up their lives to go in fight in wars, so they are part of something bigger than themselves. Being part of the group is a basic need that is leftover from an evolutionarily need to be part of the group to survive, it is that primal.
As an individual person we all want to feel like we have some worth. We want to know that we matter in some way. Often people buy things to help them feel better about who they are, status symbols for example, cars, houses. This necessity to feel like you are valued is a massive influence on what you decide to purchase.
These basic needs are what people are truly trying to fulfil when they are buying things. All great marketers know this. These are the real emotional drivers that will inform any purchasing decision.
