At this time of year when you seem to have a million things to do and less time than any other month to get them done. It is a perfect time to find little things you can do to make your life a littler easier, more efficient and productive. Here is a list of tips for you to start saving a few more of those hours and producing more in the time you have.
- Have a Default Diary
The first on the list is actually how to make most of your time when you aren’t so busy. Create a default diary that you stick to when you have nothing too pressing on. By constantly doing the little things regularly, you will know that when those busy times come you can focus on that work knowing everything else is in order.
- Do One Thing at a Time
People seem to believe a positive trait is the ability to multi task. Now, no matter how much you want to claim it is an effective working method, research has shown us again and again that it is actually really ineffective. The best way to work is focus on one thing at a time and complete that before moving on.
- Time log
Keep a record of where your time is going. This is an excellent reflective tool that can inform your decisions when thinking about where your time should go. We have published a blog on this very subject here.
- Write lists
There are many people I know who swear by lists. They even claim they’re addicted to them. It is not until recently I have started to use them myself and it’s true they are incredibly helpful. Organise your tasks in a list and it gives you clarity and the space to focus on one thing at a time.
This is quite the “in” thing at the moment. Mindfulness seems to be in every magazine, all over the internet and on TV. Now there is a very good reason for it. Taking twenty minutes a day to sit and focus on something such as your breathing really helps your mind relax. It will help your thoughts settle and you to feel much more relaxed. An excellent tool if you are ready to commit to it.
- Do Less
Now this obviously sounds a little silly. If I want to get more things done why would I do less? Well in reality in order to be more effective we often have to slow down and think. By do less I mean reflect on what is important and prioritise. Do less word and make sure it is important or valuable work.
This is a skill that so many people struggle with. How can I relinquish control to another person? Well, quite frankly, if you want to be effective you need to know how to delegate. If you have tasks that someone else can do then pass them on. Do not waste your time doing things that others can do just as well or even better.
- Turn Off Your Technology
In an age of almost unbounded communication it is important to step away from time to time. By turning off your phone, social media or email it will give you the space to think with much more clarity. If you are constantly being interrupted you will struggle to focus on the task at hand.
There you go. At a time of year when many of you will be rushing around in a mad panic to get everything done it pays to take time to reflect on your time keeping and see how you can improve it.
What tools do you use to manage your time? What do you struggle to keep to time on?
