Sometimes I find myself avoiding the truth. Whatever fearful events in my past i have experienced when truth was involved has left their trace. They have kept my fear alive. It is no different in this blog I often look for ideas that are more palatable for you our wonderful readers. This is the manifestation of a fear of some sort, maybe it is rejection or maybe it is simply an aspect of my personality that demonstrates low confidence in some of my ideas. Today I have decided to change that. Whether that will last beyond this week we shall see.
So in this weeks blog I would like to discuss the reality of the world we are in. The way business is going to change and why, in the next few years, choices are coming our way that will look and feel different to all of us. One of the main illusions of the world today, and we are all guilty of thinking it (including yours truly) is we assume, because our life has always worked under a single system, we then assume that this has always existed and always will. The reality is it hasn’t and it wont. The consumerist, scarce and individualistic society we live in today is really not very old at all. History tells us that evolution of human society is absolutely inevitable. This system will one day come to an end. That day is fast approaching.
Now why am I rambling about this stuff? Well in the last few decades there has been a shift in how people connect with one another and how they can access information with the internet. Creating a profound shift in society. Alongside this, the current system is showing cracks that have never been seen before. Many people think it is just another simple recession, in fact there is one major difference in this one. There is no money left and what is left is going to certain sections of society. This is a completely unsustainable way to be. I found out recently that there is around £90 worth of debt for every real £1 and the current solution adopted is printing more money. The reality is when the next crash arrives there is no money to bail anyone out. Now I could go on a little more about this stuff but that would just get a little ranty, so if you wanna discuss a little more please leave your comments below.
Now how does this relate to business? Your business in fact. Well I will try my best to explain. This society is breeding young people who know they cannot have the wealth their parents had (there isn’t any), the idea of buying a house or even having a pension seems like a bit of a joke. They are simply not part of this “corrupt” system that is trying to be propped up. They are outside of it, they do not subscribe to its promise. In the next decade this generation will make up the majority of your team and quite possibly your consumers. With their experience of information and connection through the internet they have a different set of values and expectations. They crave collaboration, purpose and connection. Profit is not something they subscribe too, they desire and understand abundance and they seek the chance to make a difference.
Ultimately this generation will demand hierarchies are gotten rid of and team based businesses will flourish. An environment in which people are valued above profit. The great thing about this is to be part of something bigger than yourself is one of our core human drivers that we all share. This is what is coming our way. This is what we will see in the future.
Maybe you don’t subscribe to this idea, I would love to hear your thoughts. Please leave your comments below on this topic, it would be great to get a debate going.
